Creating a calm and organized learning environment can be a struggle for any teacher. There is so much to do all the time, so it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Enter the Common Board Configuration (CBC): your secret weapon for a streamlined classroom routine!
What is a Common Board Configuration (CBC)?
Imagine a designated space in each classroom that displays key information in a consistent format. That’s the CBC! It’s a space specifically for daily routines, expectations, and reminders, keeping everyone (including you!) on the same page.
How this can be a game changer in Special Education:
Predictability is Key: Consistent structure helps students with special needs feel safe and secure. Knowing exactly where to find information on the CBC reduces anxiety and promotes independence.
Include Visuals: Visual learners thrive on clear visuals. The CBC uses headings, pictures, and color-coding to make information easily accessible for all students. Using the same visuals for subject areas, activities, etc., is also highly recommended. For example, if the picture next to the word Reading on your visual schedule is the curriculum logo, it should be the same on your CBC.
Routines Matter: The Common Board Configuration (CBC) acts as a visual roadmap for the day’s activities. Students can reference it throughout the day, promoting self-regulation and independence. Students needing additional support could have their own checklist of CBC items/tasks to check off as each one is completed.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work: CBCs are fantastic for consistency across classrooms. When each room uses the same format, students with multiple teachers experience a seamless learning journey. This can be extremely beneficial for all grade levels – moving from the K-2 to 3-5 self-contained classroom in elementary or from one Access course teacher to another in middle and high school.
How can I create a Common Board Configuration (CBC) in my classroom?
I’m so glad you asked! Here’s what you should do:
Gather Your Crew: Collaborate with teachers on your team to develop a CBC that aligns with your curriculum and your students’ specific needs.
Choose Your Components: Select key information categories such as “Learning Objectives,” “Daily Schedule,” “Homework,” and “Reminders.” Ensure the same wording is being used across classrooms. For example, one teacher shouldn’t have Reminders, and another have Don’t Forget to.
Get Creative!: Utilize the same visuals, color-coding, and fonts so it is easy and quick for students to identify and use. Remember, the CBC should be engaging and simple to understand for all learners.
Prime Location: Choose a high-traffic area in your classroom where the CBC is easily accessible to students throughout the day. Mine was right next to my dry-erase board. Things that changed weekly, such as the read-aloud, phonics skill, grammar skill, etc., were put on laminated sentence strips so they could be easily and quickly updated. All standards and learning goals were pre-typed and laminated, so all we needed to do was pull them and post them.
Keep it Fresh: Update the CBC regularly to reflect upcoming activities and learning goals.
Go Beyond Ordinary:
The beauty of the CBC is its versatility! You can adapt it to include:
Student of the Day/Week/Month Recognition: Celebrate achievements and build classroom community.
Breakfast & Lunch Menu: Include what the cafeteria will serve for lunch and breakfast the next morning.
Special Area: This one is for elementary school teachers, especially if your special area doesn’t follow a typical 5-day schedule. A picture of the place/room, door, and/or teacher could be included.
Positive Reinforcement Chart: Encourage desired behaviors with a fun, visual system.

But wait, there’s more:
If you are limited on wall space, looking for a tech-friendly option, need to share this with parents, or are a virtual teacher, digital versions are available! The same guidelines listed above apply to the digital version – use the same fonts, colors, visuals, wording, and style.
The Common Board Configuration (CBC) is more than just a board – it’s a powerful tool for creating a positive, structured learning environment. Don’t wait – transform your classroom into a haven of predictability and success today! Remember, you’ve got this, and I’m cheering you on every step of the way!
